Where did we go wrong?
Mia chose the pizza place tonight. Our first Italian pizza in Florence. The website says 13th best pizza in the world – must be true. We walked the obligatory 12 blocks through cobbly streets and a bit of major construction, but we did find the place. We were the only ones in there – one of two things could be happening. One is that 7:30pm was way too early for dinner. And the other was that the whole place was a tourist trap.
We sat down with the menu – had to do some photos and translating – and then ordered what looked like personal size pizzas. I ordered a salad … I’m not quite ready for Italian gluten … but I did decide to try some bites to see what would happen. The pizzas came to the table. The toppings are incredible – prosciutto, boccollini, basil, pesto. And the girls with their cheese pizzas with the fancy title – Margherita! The claim to fame in this place is cutting the pizza with giant scissors. Our table had two pairs and luckily no one got sliced.
The pizzas were huge – like 14 inches each – and we had 4 of them!

Luckily another table was sat with three people speaking Italian. I photographed our massive amount of pizza and waited to see what they were getting. Within ten minutes, they were delivered three pizzas and I felt immensely relieved. As we continued eating, we watched at least 20 Italians drift in and go to the back room – it was like a restaurant with a false front. What do they get to do back there that we don’t get to do up here? We will never know.
I tried a couple bites of real, Neapolitan-style pizza, ate my salad, took my digestive enzymes and called it a success. Sixteen reminders later to stop arguing amongst the siblings because no one needs to hear you in public, and we felt like we succeeded in our first Italian pizza outing. By the way … each of the two women and one man at the other table completely ate their pizzas. The digestion factor around here is amazing. Emerson keeps saying, “people are so little here – and skinny.” I believe it’s a food miracle of real ingredients and we will continue to test the theory with daily gelato and pizza.

It was delicious.
And, yes, we asked for a box.
