The Adventure on the Mountain (Monte Baldo) and the Mystery of the Lemons
Malcensine (Lake Garda) and Limone Sul Garda, Italy
In the morning, we rode the cable car to the top of Monte Baldo for much cooler temps and some hiking; then, from Malcesine, we took the ferry over to Limone Sul Garda.
The mountain top was fantastic – the hike was an adventure in itself. There is really only one and it’s best just to bring your jacket and hiking shoes (2 of ours had old shoes and that was fine too) and let the rest be the adventure that it is! You do get to watch paragliders take off from the top of the mountain.
After the mountain, it makes sense to go down to town and then take the ferry to Limone Sul Garda on the same day because these are both towns on the northern side of the lake. Limone is a special town because of the lemon house museum and history of bringing lemons to the mountains. During this history, the Hungarian border was right here at the lake. My heritage on my dad’s side is Hungarian so I always find it interesting to learn new facts and tidbits.
However, the town itself is very touristy and not many real Garda lemons are used for things. You can get ice cream in a hollowed-out lemon (at 3x the price of normal gelato). I was hoping to find real lemon essential oil and other treasures. I will stay alert for such things. The wonderful surprise is to see pomegranate trees in everyone’s yards.
The ferry boat ride across the lake is a fun little adventure – you watch the town and castle on the other side come into focus and it becomes very clear why they had to fortify their towns with a protected castle. Without it, your land and resources were left vulnerable. Even today, when something is beautiful, the desire is to own it and use up its resources for gain. The wisdom among all of these small mountain towns is to work with the land, the animals, and the vegetation and only take what is ready to be harvested.You have enough. Then, you fertilize and prune and wait to see what the next harvest will bring (it’s very biblical).
