Accents
From Florence to Rome (through Civitavecchia), Italy
After a week in Italy, as we started driving toward Rome, we started a conversation about accents. When Italian people don’t understand the word you say, it is most definitely your accent. So far, the kids have practiced ordering their own gelato. It came out like a strong Texas accent with some words that might or might not be Italian.

Overall, people enjoy interacting with Emerson the most – especially if she throws out an Italian word or two. She likes to give the tips because she has the coin purse. She found it at the market in Florence – made of tiny colorful Italian leather.
As the rest of us talked about Italian, Mia let us know she can translate for us in Spain. And continued to banter in Spanish for about 20 minutes while everyone else kept saying this or that about the rental car sounds, the starlink mini (that is keeping the school train online), and the fields of sheep and cows in the countryside. It’s a typical road trip.
Only 37 minutes until espresso!
In addition to accents, I am already aware of the care over trash, compost, recycling, and generally not wasting. This morning, in our tiny country kitchen, I boiled up the rest of our patatas (potatoes), then fried them in some olive oil with some chunky salt. We topped them with a bit of leftover ragú – it was great.
